According to Walter Benjamin...
The world of Filmmaking is an enormous industry. No longer is film just a copy of stage performance as Benjamin saw it. Neither, is film just a medium between actors and cameramen. Filmmaking is more then a simple media but rather an art form that would challnge Benjamin's thinking today. Within modern filmmaking there is cinematic expression and cinematography that captures the essence of the world's most beautiful scenery and landscapes. Editing in action, that leaves audiences breathless to frightened to spellbound. Film has found its Aura.
Modern Fimmaking can distort reality in ways Benjamin would never have imagined. Between camer a angles, lenses. POV shots, CGI and digital editting and animation, the aura of film has come to life. Films may be reproduced and shown around the world but each viewers experience is personal and unique, according to their own prospective.
According to Benjamin, the sense of aura was loss on film. He stated that film was stealing an actor's aura of stage performance and breaking it down to lines, cuts and slices with only bits and pieces recorded to be edited later. He wrote that In reality, today's modern editiing techniques, sequencing, and acting styles would be argued to be an artform of their very own, with its own Aura. An example would be the way people flock to an auteur director's films based on the mise-en-scene of their authored work and its aura.
Beyond Benjamin and the days of stage performance plays, limited by backdrops for imaginery locations and settings; today's films can bring the most abstract and obscure locations to the audience. With movie magic, costuming, cinematography, and film coloring any era in history can be vividly reproduced for the movie audience. Many times the viewer falls into the film and forgets he's in a cinema. This form of art and Aura would rival Benjamin's theories today.
"The art of storytelling is reaching its end because the epic side of truth, wisdom is dying out."
"To perceive the aura of an object we look at means to invest it with the ability to look at using return."
"The only way of knowing a person is to love them without hope."
"The construction of life is at present in the power of facts far more than convictions."
